New Jersey college students who would like to take part in the NJ AltFormat program must:

  • Identify yourself to your college's Disability Services Support Office
  • Provide the required documentation to your DSS Office to document your print disability

A Typical Request from Start to Finish

  1. A New Jersey college student must first contact their Disability Support Office at the New Jersey College or University he or she is attending.
  2. The Disability Support Office or the student will check Bookshare.org, RFBD.org, Internet Public Library, Project Gutenberg, and with individual publishers to determine if the book is already available in alternative format.
  3. The Disability Support Office will, if they have not already done so, fill out a College AltFormat Agreement Form and mail/email/fax the completed form to the NJ AltFormat Center.
  4. The student will complete a Student AltFormat Agreement Form and mail/email/fax/drop off the completed form to the NJ AltFormat Center.
  5. The Disability Support Office will contact the NJ AltFormat Center to discuss the request and verify that the student is eligible to receive text in alternative format.
  6. The staff of the NJ AltFormat Center will work with the Disability Support Office and the student to determine the appropriate alternative format.
  7. The Disability Support Office will provide a copy of the book/material to be scanned to the NJ AltFormat Center.
  8. The cover and binding will be removed from the book in order to be sent through the high speed scanner.
  9. The book must be in in excellent condition as determined by the following description: Undamaged cover, dust jacket included for hard covers, no missing pages, all pages undamaged (no creases or tears), only one color highlighting of text, no damage to binding, no writing in margins.
  10. The student will receive a username and password to access www.njaltformat.org/login.html.
  11. The student will download the file type he or she requested.
  12. Books, if requested, will be comb bound and returned to the student.
